James's Story
Born in 1974, James Miller represented Australia in athletics at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. Miller was 22 when he competed in the men’s pole vault, a technical event in which timing, speed and nerve are all tested in a matter of seconds.
At Atlanta, Miller cleared 5.20 metres in qualification and finished 23rd overall. While his Olympic appearance was limited to one Games, selection for Australia in a highly specialised field event marked him as one of the nation’s leading vaulters of that period. His performance in Atlanta secured his place in Australia’s Olympic athletics history.
