James Matheson

James Matheson was the second best placed Australian male mogul skier at PyeongChang 2018. The Olympic rookie advanced from the second qualification run into the first final, but was two places shy of moving through to the second final, recording a best score of 73.96 in Final 1 to finish 14th overall.

Matheson began freestyle skiing in 2004 and first emerged on the international moguls scene in 2010 when he qualified for the Europa Cup at the age of 15. The following year he was crowned the under-19 Australian moguls champion.

Born in Buenos Aires, Matheson made his World Cup debut in Deer Valley, USA in January 2013 where he placed 30th. After winning bronze at the Val St. Come North American Cup event in 2016, and winning silver in the Australian and New Zealand dual moguls event in the same year, Matheson qualified for his first full World Cup tour for the 2016/17 season.

He went on to qualify for his first World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain, where he placed 29th in the single moguls event and 28th in dual moguls. In the 2017/18 World Cup season Matheson recorded a personal best result at the first Thaiwoo World Cup, placing seventh and one place off qualifying for his first Super Final.
