Jake's Story

Having been introduced to the sport by his uncle at the age of six, Jake Bensted first represented his country when he was 15. He won his first of five straight junior national titles in 2010 and claimed his first senior national title in 2012. Bensted won the 2013 Oceania Championship, finished second in 2014 before being winning Commonwealth Games bronze later that year. Back-to-back Oceania titles followed in 2015 and 2016 as Bensted qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in the -73kg division. He opened his debut Olympic campaign with a victory over Andrew Thomas Mlugu of Tanzania before going down to Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan in the round of 16.
