Hayden's Story

Reigning from Sydney, Hayden Smith joined teammates Lucas Mata, Lachlan Reidy and David Mari in the 4man bobsleigh crew at his debut Olympic Games in PyeongChang.

In the four-man event, the Aussie boys finished in 25th place just +2.29 seconds behind the gold medallists from Germany, South Koreans in silver and another German crew in third. The Aussie bobsleigh crew were praised at the 2018 Games for being the spirit behind the team, cheering their teammates on loudly at events.

The 25-year-old first tried his hand at the fast paced sport of bobsleigh in Lake Placid, New York during 2014, going on to make his international debut at the 2010 Olympic Track in Whistler, Canada.

Originally from a rugby and athletics background, Smith helped the Aussie crew to some top results in the 2017/2018 season leading into the Olympics, including an 8th place in the 4man North America Cup in Calgary, Canada.

When he’s not competing Smith loves to hike, particularly in the Royal National Park in Sydney. Coffee and a good book are also high on the list.
