Hannah Buckling

Sydney born Hannah Buckling made her Olympic debut at Rio in the defensive line on the Australian Women’s Water Polo Team.
The Aussies kicked started their Rio campaign with a strong, dominant 14-4 win over Russia. Their second pool match proved to be more of a challenge with the green and gold side narrowly going down to Italy 7-8 despite the scores being tied until the final seconds.
The Aussies then powered home to take a decisive 10-3 win over hosts Brazil in the final pool game, setting up a quarter final clash against Hungary. In a physical, tense and ultimately heartbreaking encounter the Australians lost in a penalty shootout after scores were level, 8-8, after four quarters, ending their 2016 Olympic campaign.
Buckling started playing the sport in high school and made her international debut at the 2011 Canada Cup, taking home gold. The same year she won bronze at the 2011 FINA World Junior Championships in Italy and was crowned the Australian Junior Female Water Polo Player of the Year.
In 2012 Buckling played for the Sydney University Lions Water Polo Team in the Australian National League and was selected into the 2012 Australian Olympic water polo squad but narrowly missed out on the final selection.
In 2013 she moved to America for one season to attend the University of Southern California and play for the university’s water polo team, the Trojans. That year, along with fellow Stinger Jayde Appel, she won the 2013 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championships with the USC Trojans. She also helped Australia claim silver at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Buckling has a Bachelor of Science from Sydney University and is starting a medical degree in 2017 to pursue a career in medicine when she hangs up her swimmers.
