Fergus's Story
Young gun, Blake Govers followed in his brother Kieran’s footsteps (London 2012) and made his Olympic debut after only 12 months in the senior Australian squad. Govers’ was the youngest member of the men’s hockey squad at the Rio Games at just 18-years-old.
The Aussie Olympic campaign kicked off with a 2-1 win over trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand but despite starting strong, the side then suffered back-to-back 1-0 losses to Spain and Belgium. Determined to claim their third straight Olympic medal, the side then secured a 2-1 win over Great Britain and a 9-0 victory over Brazil which included two goals for the young Govers. The Aussies had set themselves up for a quarter-final clash against the number 2 ranked side, the Netherlands but hopes of a gold medal quickly faded as the Dutch secured a 4-0 win, knocking the green and gold favourites out of the Olympic competition.
Born and raised in Wollongong, Govers spent less than 12 months in the National Development squad before he was called up to the Olympic training squad, and made his International debut in May 2015 at the Hobart International Challenge, scoring a goal on debut to celebrate.
Govers proved his potential in the senior ranks at the 2015 World League semi-final where he was crowned Top Scorer and Best Junior Player. The youngster was then named in the 2015 World League final squad but unfortunately fractured his foot in the first game of the tournament against Belgium.
The younger Govers spent the 2014/2015 playing for Wimbledon club, where he helped secured the 2015 English Championship with a huge five goals in the grand final confirming Wimbledon’s place in the 2015/2016 Euro Hockey League.
Govers grew up alongside his three older brothers – Hayden, Kieran and Scott and always had a hockey stick in his hands. Off the pitch, Govers has a passion for Holden classic cards and is a qualified bricklayer.
