Badminton was very popular in Indonesia where Eugenia Tanaka was born. Competing since the age of 11, Tanaka moved to Australia at the age of 14 and joined the Victorian State team. Tanaka began training with doubles partner Tania Luiz in 2007 after being selected for her first national team and gaining citizenship that year. An ACL injury to Luiz hampered their progress but the pair managed to qualify for Beijing ahead of the top ranked New Zealand Team.
