As a 16-year-old, Eliza Stankovic contracted meningitis which ravaged her body causing her to have both legs amputated below the knees as well as losing some fingers. After a long recovery, Stankovic used her passion for sport to become a successful wheelchair athlete. At the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, Stankovic contested the 800m wheelchair demonstration event, taking home the silver medal.
At the 2004 Paralympic Games, Stankovic contested five events: 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 5000m. Making the finals in all her races, Stankovic's best result was fourth in the 1,500m in a time of 3:28.66.
