Duncan's Story

Coming from a background in track and field and surf lifesaving, Duncan Pugh got into bobsleigh at the age of 32 in Igls, Austria at the encouragement of a friend. He made his debut on the international circuit at the European Cup in 2007 and competing in the two-man, produced consistent results at the America's and European Cups throughout the 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons. He achieved his first podium finish at the 2009 America's Cup in Calgary, Canada in December 2009, getting bronze with pilot Chris Spring. Pugh made his Olympic debut in Vancouver at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. In the first run of the two-man event, Pugh and pilot Jeremy Rolleston crashed. Rolleston caught his foot in his steering mechanism as he climbed into the sled at the start of his first run, and was forced to firstly extricate himself and then reach down into the front of the sled to find the D-ring so he could steer. He had only just secured it when the sled tipped over, in curve four (of 16), leaving Rolleston and Pugh no option but to tuck themselves in as tightly as possible while the overturned craft slid down the remainder of the course. As they did not finish the course they were eliminated from further runs. The four-man sled withdrew because of injury.
