When Australia made its Asian Indoor and Martial Arts debut, Deanna Kyriazopolous made history as the country’s first Flag Bearer. The 18-year-old carried the flag for Australia’s 18-strong team at Ashgabat 2017 before lining up in the women’s -46kg taekwondo competition.

As the luck of the draw would have it, the Sydney-sider drew the eventual silver medallist in the opening round of competition, and after a very evenly matched and low scoring contest, Nayeon Han of Korea took the 9-2 victory.

Kyriazopolous trains with Ali Khalil, the Rio 2016 head coach and brother of two-time Olympian Sefwan Khalil. She was also a member of Australia's 2015 Pacific Games team, where she won the silver medal.
