Dean's Story
Born in Perth in 1970, Dean Capobianco developed into one of Australia’s leading 200-metre sprinters of the early 1990s and was affiliated with Curtin University. Capobianco was 22 when he competed at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games and 26 when he returned for Atlanta 1996, building an international career in an era of deep global strength in the sprint events.
Capobianco’s best Olympic result came in Barcelona, where he advanced to the quarter-finals of the men’s 200 metres and finished 17th overall. Four years later in Atlanta, he again contested the 200 metres and also ran in Australia’s men’s 4x400-metre relay squad, which placed 12th overall after reaching the semi-finals. Beyond the Olympics, his career peak came at the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart, where he finished fifth in the 200 metres in a personal best 20.18 seconds, and he also won the Stawell Gift in 1990. Those performances secured his place among Australia’s notable sprinters of his generation.
