David's Story
Born in East Fremantle, Western Australia, in 1946, David Neesham began playing water polo with Melville Water Polo Club at 14. He developed into an innovative goalkeeper, adapting techniques observed in sports such as football. Neesham was 25 when he made his Olympic debut at Munich 1972, where Australia finished 12th.
Neesham captained Australia at Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980, with the team placing 11th and seventh respectively. His international career included three world championships and an estimated 285 appearances for Australia, then a national record. Neesham later coached the Australian women’s team to World Cup gold in 1995 and was inducted into the Water Polo Australia Hall of Fame in 2010.
