David Giles and Colin Beashel competed in the Star class sailing at every Olympic regatta from Barcelona 1992 through to Athens 2004. Their best result was a bronze medal, behind Brazil and Sweden, at Atlanta 1996. The pair were world champions in the Stars in 1998 and, with Richard Uechtritz, the Etchells 22 class in 1993 and 1995. For their world championship in the Star class, Giles and Beashel won the 1998-99 Male Sailor of the Year award.
