Dave Powell

Having just missed out on selection for the London 2012 Olympic Games, David Powell made his Olympic debut in Rio. He went down in the opening round of the singles to Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre before lining up alongside Chris Yan and Heming Hu in the team event. The trio faced Hong Kong in the best of five match series, going down 3-0 with Powell losing his singles match in straight sets.
Powell took up the sport when he was eight-years-old and has been coached by dual-Olympian Mark Smythe since he first picked up a racket. After just missing out on realising his Olympic dream in London, he lined up for Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he 9th in both the men’s and mixed doubles, 17th in the singles and 5th in the team event.
