Chris's Story
Chris Guccione took up tennis at age 10 before he turned professional in 2003. His tennis-playing parents, Santo and Dianne, introduced him to the game and he and his brother took it up because they enjoyed the competition.
“Gucc” is renowned for his big serve and he broke into the singles top 100 in 2007. He made his Olympic debut at the Beijing 2008 Games where he was knocked out of the first round in singles. He also competed in the men’s doubles partnering with Lleyton Hewitt and the pair had an epic first round win, beating Argentina’s Agustin Santiago Calleri and Juan Monaco 18-16 in the third set in a match that lasted over three hours. They were later knocked out in the quarterfinals by eventual bronze medallists the Bryan brothers.
Eight years later in Rio Guccione was selected to compete alongside John Peers in the men’s doubles. The pair lost in the first round to Argentina.
A Geelong Cats AFL fan, Guccione made his Davis Cup debut in 2005. He counts his proudest moment as winning the fifth rubber in Australia’s 2006 Davis Cup tie against Switzerland in Geneva, giving Australia a 3-2 victory.
