Chloe's Story

Play

Chloe Esposito claimed Australia's first medal in modern pentathlon when she won gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Esposito started the final event, the combined running/shooting discipline, in seventh place. She performed strongly, only missing one target in the four lots of five shots and her final combined time of 12 minutes, 10.19 seconds earned her 1372 points and an Olympic record.

It was a family affair in Rio, with Chloe joined by her father and coach Daniel Esposito who competed at the 1984 Olympic Games, and her brother Max made his Olympic debut in the same sport.

Esposito made history as the youngest Australian female modern pentathlete to compete at an Olympic selection event in 2007. The 15-year-old competed at the Oceania Championships but missed out on a spot on the Beijing Olympic Team.

She performed strongly in London to finish seventh overall. After a fair performance in the opening fencing discipline, Esposito’s trademark strong swim and solid riding pulled her up 12 places to 16th going into the final leg. In the exciting combined run-shoot climax, Esposito made up nine places to claim a top 10 finish.

Chloe’s younger sister Emily competed at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics in pistol shooting.
