Benjamin's Story
Born in Canberra in 1976, Benjamin Vincent represented Australia in wrestling at two Olympic Games and was affiliated with ACT Turner Police Citizens Youth Club. Vincent was 19 when he competed at Atlanta 1996 and 23 at the Sydney 2000 Games, reflecting his place among the country’s leading heavyweight wrestlers at the time.
Vincent’s Olympic career spanned two styles of wrestling. At Atlanta he contested the men’s 100-kilogram freestyle division and finished 18th. Four years later, at a home Games in Sydney, he competed in the men’s 97-kilogram Greco-Roman event and placed 20th. To qualify for two Olympics in different disciplines was a notable achievement in a sport where depth of skill and toughness were equally important, and it gave Vincent a distinct place in Australia’s wrestling history.
