Bengt's Story
Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1956, Bengt Olov Sandstrom became a three-time Olympian for Australia in pistol shooting and was affiliated with Perth Comets. Sandstrom was 32 when he made his Olympic debut at Seoul 1988, 36 at Barcelona 1992 and 40 at Atlanta 1996, giving him a sustained international career across three Games in two pistol events.
Sandstrom competed in both the 10-metre air pistol and 50-metre free pistol at each Olympics. His best Olympic result came in Seoul, where he finished 23rd in the 50-metre free pistol, while his other placings ranged from 26th to 37th. Beyond the Olympics, he built an outstanding Commonwealth Games record, winning gold medals in 1990 and 1994 and adding silver and bronze across air pistol and free pistol events. Those results placed Sandstrom among Australia’s leading pistol shooters of his era.
